I use the term with people of all races, creeds, and colors. (Or Colours if you prefer that spelling.)

It does happen infrequently, as I do not go out of my way to find an excuse to say it.

If it helps to understand my reasoning, I was raised as a strongly conservative Christian and was strictly forbidden to read any version of the Bible except the King James Version. I could quote from memory the specific verses that are found to be abominations in the NIV and other versions, but I do not care anymore. The point of all this is that the word that starts with an f and British people may use to define a cigarette is what I was taught to refer to a specific group of people. I was taught a lot of stuff that I have since cast aside. My vocabulary however remains several generations out of date. And I am resistant to changing it on the whim of people I barely met.

I have yet to see much that suggests any of you care a flying fuck for my reasoning. But I gave you the benefit of the doubt. Be well.
